OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 Conference

Exploring Effective Uses of Generative AI in Education

OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI)
Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 March 2026

About the conference

After the launch of the OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026: Exploring Effective Uses of Generative AI in Education, the OECD “Smart Data and Digital Technology in Education” project team organises a two-day international conference that will bring together leading researchers, country officials, international organisations, EdTech representatives and a wide range of education stakeholders to discuss in greater depth the main findings of the report and the lessons learnt from the project’s peer-learning activities. The conference aims to:
  • Offer a wide audience the opportunity to hear from and exchange with the Digital Education Outlook’s authors on the latest research evidence on the best uses of GenAI for learning, teaching, and streamlining administrative operations
  • Reflect on the Digital Education Outlook’s insights from the perspectives of different stakeholders, including teachers, governments, companies and young people
  • Learn from diverse countries’ approaches to steer the development and uptake of educational GenAI tools that meet quality and safety standards and align with pedagogical requirements
  • Envision what the future of GenAI in education looks like.
To follow the conference, please first register here and then click on “Join the Live” (no Zoom links are needed) on the day of the event. The working language of the conference will be English.

OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026:
Exploring Effective Uses of Generative AI in Education

Generative AI (GenAI) is reshaping the educational landscape, beyond teaching and learning. Unlike earlier waves of education technology, much of GenAI is freely accessible and largely used beyond institutional control due to its intuitiveness and versatility. The OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 analyses emerging research that suggests GenAI can support learning when guided by clear teaching principles. However, if designed or used without pedagogical guidance, outsourcing tasks to GenAI simply enhances performance with no real learning gains. The Outlook highlights the benefits of GenAI as a tutor, partner and assistant, and synthesises experts’ evidence and insights on the design criteria that make it work for education.

OECD Digital Education Outlook 2023:
Towards an Effective Digital Education Ecosystem

The OECD Digital Education Outlook 2023 provides a comparative, thematic analysis of how countries shape or could shape their digital ecosystem.

Student information systems (or Education Management Information System - EMIS), learning management systems, digital assessment platforms, study and careers guidance: what are the different components of countries’ digital education ecosystem? How and to what extent do countries leverage teachers’ digital competences and the latest opportunities offered by artificial intelligence (AI)? How can countries make the most of their digital ecosystem so that it is trustworthy, useful, effective, and equitable? How do and can countries allow for digital education to continue to improve and innovate education?

Opportunities, guidelines and guardrails for effective and equitable use of AI in education

This discussion paper on AI in education was jointly developed by the OECD and Education International initially as an input to discussions in the International Summit of the Teaching Profession 2023. The use of artificial intelligence and digital technology as part of teaching and learning is thus the focus of the text. The text was then refined through country, expert and stakeholder consultations and reviewed by the OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) governing board members as well as the Education International members. It aims to facilitate collaboration between education authorities and the teaching profession and inspire further discussions and guidelines on the use of AI in education.

OECD Digital Education Outlook 2021: Pushing the Frontiers with Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain and Robots

How might digital technology and notably smart technologies based on artificial intelligence (AI), learning analytics, robotics, and others transform education? This book explores such question. It focuses on how smart technologies currently change education in the classroom and the management of educational organisations and systems. The book delves into beneficial uses of smart technologies such as learning personalisation, supporting students with special learning needs, and blockchain diploma credentialing. It also considers challenges and areas for further research. The findings offer pathways for teachers, policy makers, and educational institutions to digitalise education while optimising equity and inclusivity.
