Scaling up Best Available Techniques (BAT) for green industrial transformation

OnlineNov 10, 2026 | 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Description

Best Available Techniques (BAT) are a key enabler of green industrialisation and the low-carbon transition, allowing industries to grow while minimising pollution, resource use and costs. Widely used to set evidence-based environmental conditions, BAT protect human health and the environment while improving industrial performance. By adopting BAT, industries increase energy and material efficiency, reduce emissions and waste, and strengthen productivity, compliance and access to international markets and sustainable finance: critical for competitive, low-carbon growth. The OECD promotes BAT through analysis, technical policies and capacity building. Its Expert Group on BAT has supported international exchange for over a decade, and BAT are embedded in the OECD Recommendation on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC), supporting global alignment. This session will showcase how BAT can accelerate industrial decarbonisation in sectors such as steel, cement and textiles, and explore emerging areas including hydrogen and waste recovery. It will highlight practical approaches to scaling BAT through policies, permitting and investment strategies.
