Unlocking industrial transformation in emerging and developing economies

OnlineNov 3, 2026 | 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Description

Transforming energy-intensive industries in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) will require substantial investment in low-carbon technologies, enabling infrastructure and cleaner industrial processes. Yet high upfront costs, financing risks and uncertain market conditions continue to constrain investment, particularly in sectors such as steel, cement and chemicals. This session, co-organised by the OECD and UNIDO, will examine how governments, industry and financial institutions can accelerate industrial transformation in EMDEs. Bringing together perspectives from international organisations and experts working on industrial decarbonisation, the discussion will explore the technological, policy and financing conditions needed to translate industrial decarbonisation ambitions into investable projects. Particular attention will be given to technology deployment and enabling infrastructure, policies that can strengthen demand for low-carbon industrial products and the role of public finance, concessional instruments and risk-sharing mechanisms in mobilising private investment.
