Disruption to recovery: Making transport work for everyone

OnlineNov 4, 2026 | 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Description

Extreme events, from floods and heatwaves to pandemics and conflict, disrupt more than transport networks. They also change how people commute to work, care for others and manage daily life. These pressures are often uneven, with women frequently taking on additional care and household responsibilities while facing greater barriers to travel and greater difficulties resuming daily activities. For policymakers, restoring transport services is only part of the task. Recovery also depends on whether people can reach jobs, schools, healthcare and those who rely on them. This session will launch a new report by the International Transport Forum (ITF) and the FIA Foundation Foundation bringing together evidence on gender, mobility and resilience and identifying ways to make transport responses more inclusive. Drawing on these findings, the discussion will explore how policymakers can account for care journeys, identify whose mobility is most affected and ensure that recovery restores access equitably.
