Unlocking finance for industrial decarbonisation in emerging and developing economies

OnlineNov 3, 2026 | 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Description

Decarbonising energy-intensive industries in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) will require substantial investment in low-carbon technologies, infrastructure and industrial processes. Yet high upfront costs, financing risks and uncertain market conditions continue to constrain investment, particularly in sectors such as steel, cement and chemicals. Co-organised by the OECD and UNIDO, this session will examine how governments, industry and financial institutions can work together to mobilise investment for industrial decarbonisation in EMDEs. Drawing on country experiences and perspectives from industry and financing institutions, the discussion will explore the policy and financing conditions needed to bring low-carbon industrial projects to implementation. Particular attention will be given to the role of public finance, concessional instruments and risk-sharing mechanisms in mobilising private capital, alongside policies that can strengthen demand for low-carbon industrial products and improve investment conditions. The session will also consider opportunities to build on existing international initiatives and country-led approaches to accelerate investment in industrial decarbonisation.
