Energy efficiency for competitiveness: Mobilising SME investments

OnlineNov 13, 2026 | 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM

Description

Improving energy efficiency offers SMEs a practical opportunity to enhance competitiveness, reduce exposure to energy price volatility and contribute to the net-zero transition. Yet many SMEs continue to under-invest in energy efficiency, even where opportunities are technically feasible and financially attractive. This session will explore why investment gaps persist and what conditions are needed to help SMEs move from identifying opportunities to implementing projects. The discussion will examine the financial, informational and organisational barriers that often constrain investment, as well as the role of diagnostics, energy audits, advisory services, peer-learning networks and financing mechanisms in accelerating uptake. Key questions for discussion include: - What are the main barriers preventing SMEs from investing in energy efficiency? - How can governments, financial institutions and business support organisations work together to overcome these barriers? - What role can diagnostics, audits and advisory services play in helping SMEs identify and implement projects? - How can financing solutions be better tailored to the needs and capacities of SMEs? - What lessons can be drawn from successful initiatives in OECD countries?
