Description
As climate change increases the frequency and severity of droughts, floods, and other extreme weather events, farmers face growing uncertainty and financial risks. Agricultural insurance can play an important role in helping farmers manage these risks and recover from climate shocks. It can strengthen resilience, support investment in climate-smart practices, and contribute to broader adaptation efforts. However, many insurance systems still struggle to provide effective and sustainable support in a changing climate.
This session will explore how agricultural insurance can better support climate adaptation. It will discuss how governments can design insurance schemes that protect farmers while encouraging risk reduction and resilience-building measures. Drawing on experiences from OECD and partner countries, speakers will examine the role of public support, the links between insurance and other risk management tools, and the opportunities and challenges of scaling up agricultural insurance. The discussion will highlight practical lessons for policymakers seeking to strengthen resilience in agriculture and support adaptation in the face of growing climate risks.
