Description
Globally, the agriculture, forestry and other land use sector is responsible for one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. These and other environmental concerns are receiving increasing attention in government policies, including through trade-related measures. While some trade-related measures have the potential to accelerate a transition to more sustainable agriculture, there are also risks for example, a multiplication of such measures could lead to increasing fragmentation of international trade and could create transaction costs which act as a potential barrier to trade for small producers and producers in developing countries.
This session will discuss the current landscape of trade-related measures linked to the environmental sustainability of agriculture, building on recent OECD work which identified 130 measures in OECD and EU countries. It will also discuss what we know and don't know about the effects of these measures - both in terms of trade and environmental outcomes.
