Description
Christian Shabantu MPENGA is an expert in statistics applied to the mining sector and in value chain analysis, with a particular focus on artisanal mining, production flows, official publications and statistical discrepancies in export data. He has coordinated several missions to map artisanal mining sites in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he has worked for over ten years as a principal consultant for the Ministry of Mines and other state and international bodies.
Formerly in charge of publication at the Cadastre Minier, he was then appointed senior expert on mining issues at the APCSC (Agence de Pilotage, de Coordination et de Suivi des Conventions), where he contributed in particular to the technical analysis of the Sino-Congolese contract. He is currently Deputy Technical Director and Head of Studies and Statistics at the Conseil Congolais de la Batterie, the strategic body responsible for steering the local processing of critical minerals.
His most notable work includes a report on the creation of a 2021 mining credit fund (CTCPM) for the artisanal sector, an assessment of transparency in mining publications (2023), a review of statistical discrepancies between Congolese and international figures on mining exports (2023), and a compliance audit of 17 companies in the sector. It has also worked with partners such as GIZ, BGR and UNDP on governance and mining traceability projects.
