María del Pilar is an economist and historian from Universidad de los Andes, with a PhD in Economic Development and a Master’s in Economics from the London School of Economics (LSE). She also holds master's degrees in History and Economics from Universidad de los Andes, where she has worked as a researcher and lecturer. She currently serves as Secretary of Economic Development of Bogotá, leading efforts to accelerate the city’s economic recovery, promote job creation and food supply, boost entrepreneurship and technological innovation, and enhance productivity and competitiveness. With a strong focus on gender equality, María del Pilar has specialized in development economics, political economy, and economic history. Her research has explored public policies related to women's rights, land concentration, armed conflict, and post-conflict recovery, emphasizing the importance of gender equity in climate finance and land allocation. She has held academic and research positions at institutions such as the LSE Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean, Centre for Women, Peace and Security, Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa, and CESED. She also leads the Women in Environmental Economics for Development (WinEED) network under the global Environment for Development (EfD) initiative. Her professional experience includes consulting for international organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank, UNICEF, CAF, and UNDP, as well as Colombian institutions like Finagro and the National Planning Department.
