Recognized Barranquilla leader who has left a significant mark on the politics, development, and transformation of Barranquilla during his terms as mayor of the city. Civil engineer and specialist in mining project engineering from Universidad del Norte in Colombia, with a specialization in senior management from Universidad de los Andes and a master’s degree in project management from the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States. Alex has significant experience and a long-standing trajectory as a public servant. He began his career as a councilman of Barranquilla in 1997, served as governor of Atlántico in 2003, and was mayor of Barranquilla in two different periods: 2008–2011 and 2016–2019. He also served as High Presidential Advisor for the Regions. As mayor of Barranquilla, he was elected by a wide margin at the polls and enjoyed remarkable public approval of over 95% during his term, thanks to the implementation of pioneering projects such as Todos al Parque, Barrios a la Obra, the Malecón del Río, the transformation of public education, and the improvement of the quality of life for citizens. He has proven to be a man of action and a great executor of projects that have transformed the face of Barranquilla and its residents, restoring pride to its people. In October 2023, Alejandro Char Chaljub was elected for the third time as mayor of Barranquilla for the 2024–2027 term. With a strong city proposal focused on social and competitive development, he reaffirms his vocation and passion for working hand-in-hand with communities, prioritizing an inclusive and sustainable development model to deliver more opportunities to the people of Barranquilla.
