Manuel Fernández Ariza is from Barranquilla, an economist from Universidad de los Andes, and holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Illinois, United States. He began his professional career at Fundesarrollo as a Research Assistant; after two and a half years, he became the Technical Director of that organization, and for four years he served as its Executive Director. He then joined the Government of the Atlántico Department as Secretary of Finance during the first administration of Governor Eduardo Verano de la Rosa. Following that, he became the Manager of Transmetro, leading Barranquilla’s Mass Transit System for nearly five years. He also worked at the National Department for Social Prosperity, founded his own consultancy firm specializing in finance and strategy, and most recently served as Director of Barranquilla Cómo Vamos, a position that gave him insight into how people in Atlántico perceive the future of the economy, their economic environment, and public administration. He is currently an adjunct professor of Economics and Political Science at Universidad del Norte. Since April 1, 2020, he has been serving as the Executive President of the Barranquilla Chamber of Commerce, following a unanimous appointment by the Board of Directors of the organization, currently chaired by Luis Magin Guardela Contreras. Fernández Ariza has received notable recognitions, including the Business Entrepreneurship Award in 2011, granted by the Rotary Club of Barranquilla, and he was a Colfuturo Fellow in 1998. He also co-edited and contributed to the book Policies to Reduce Regional Disparities in Colombia, alongside Adolfo Meisel Roca and Weilder Guerra of the Banco de la República, published in the Regional Economics collection in October 2007.
