Description

Makoto Okubo is assigned as General Manager, International Affairs, Nippon Life Insurance Company, currently based in London, after spending 9 years in New York. He is responsible for global business planning, international accounting, regulatory, and sustainability matters. Among other global activities, he is currently serving as Sherpa of the Asia Pacific Financial Forum (APFF) Insurance, Health and Retirement Income Network. Previously, he reviewed Nippon Life’s overseas operations, mergers and acquisitions, and global risk management strategy. From April 2002 to June 2006, he was employed by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and served as a member of the IAIS (International Association of Insurance Supervisors) Secretariat, sponsored by FSA Japan. Within the Secretariat, he was responsible for standards implementation, including technical assistance and training of insurance supervisors in over 150 countries. Prior to the BIS, he had 14 years of experience in Nippon Life Group, mainly on planning and research on accounting, pensions, and financial service laws and regulations. He also spent 5 years in New York as a lead researcher at NLI Research Institute on banking, securities, and insurance sectors in the United States and Canada, and launched his personal site, Mackglobe.com, for industry professionals, regulators, and researchers used in over 90 countries.
