Biography

The longest-serving chairman of the People's Party studied veterinary hygiene and ecology. He was elected to the position of party chairman after the KDU-ČSL failed to enter the Chamber of Deputies in 2010 for the first time in the history of the independent Czech Republic. In 2013, he succeeded in returning the People's Party to the benches of the lower house in the next parliamentary elections. He briefly served as chairman of the Chamber of Deputies and deputy chairman of the Chamber of Deputies. In the government of the ČSSD and the ANO movement he held the position of Deputy Prime Minister from 2014 and was also Chairman of the Council for Research, Development and Innovation. He will return to the party's presidency at the 2024 congress in Olomouc, where he will serve as 1st Vice-Chairman. He currently serves in the regional council as the chairman of the KHK Audit Committee. In 2021 he defended his mandate as a deputy for the third time.
