Description

Matthias is a corporate sustainability expert with 20 years of experience in business and sustainable development. Trained as an economist at the universities of Hohenheim and Maastricht, he started his career in international development cooperation at KPMG Germany, before doing a PhD in development economics. He then worked with Fairtrade International on sustainability standards. He joined the European Commission’s DG for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO, now DG INTPA) in 2011 where he led on the drafting of DG DEVCO's first private sector engagement strategy. He then went to the private sector advising major companies, development agencies and NGOs on sustainability strategies and development partnerships before returning to the European Commission in 2019 with thematic responsibility for global supply chain sustainability and due diligence, leading on DG INTPA’s contribution to the Commission proposal for a Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and the programming of related accompanying support measures. In May 2022, Matthias joined the OECD Centre for Responsible Business Conduct to lead its garment and footwear sector team, and help the Centre engage more strategically with developing countries on RBC.
