Description

Infrastructure is the backbone of an economy, delivering essential services such as transport, energy and water that build prosperity and safeguard the quality of life. However, with climate impacts intensifying, many conventional or ''grey'' infrastructure systems are struggling under escalating climate pressures and require upgrades or refurbishment to remain operational, with serious consequences for public health and economic development. Nature-based Solutions (NbS), whether standalone or hybrid with grey infrastructure, offer a cost-effective and adaptable pathway to resilience. By harnessing natural systems, they can mitigate threats such as flooding and extreme heat, while enhancing biodiversity and water security. In many contexts, their economic, environmental and social returns surpass those of purely engineered approaches. This session will explore the opportunities to integrate NbS into existing and new infrastructure systems, and the financing approaches to accelerate the uptake of NbS approaches to strengthen infrastructure resilience.
