Mikaël Maes
OECD
Data Scientist, Earth Observation, Environment Directorate
Description
Mikaël serves as an Environmental Data Scientist at the Environment Directorate of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, where he leverages Earth observation and geospatial data to address pressing environmental challenges and climate change issues. His work focuses on developing data and indicators for a variety of environmental themes, including monitoring climate-related hazards and disasters, assessing air pollution exposure, tracking biodiversity pressures and protected areas, and aligning guidelines for SEEA land cover accounts.
Prior to this, Mikaël completed a Ph.D. project at University College London (United Kingdom), where he explored the role of urban ecosystems in adolescent cognition and mental health. His research used health data from a large epidemiological study in London to demonstrate the importance of forests for adolescents’ mental health and cognition. Additionally, he investigated how such environmental data and statistics can inform decision-making through environmental accounting. Through this work, Mikaël has specialised in understanding the complex interactions between urban ecosystems and human health, emphasising their critical role in ecosystem accounts and policymaking.
