Biography
Alpha Sesay is the Deputy Minister of Justice for Sierra Leone, appointed in July 2023. Prior to this, he served as Senior Democracy, Rights and Governance Advisor for USAID in Sierra Leone. Before joining USAID, Mr Sesay was Senior Advocacy Officer at the Open Society Foundations in Washington DC, focusing on human rights litigation and advocacy before regional and international human rights bodies.
He brings extensive experience in international human rights, international criminal justice, and accountability for atrocity crimes. His work has involved the Special Court for Sierra Leone, the International Criminal Court in The Hague, and regional institutions such as the ECOWAS Court and the African Commission and Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Mr Sesay has engaged with the European and African Union, as well as national governments, on issues including rule of law, justice sector reform, transitional justice, anti-corruption, and access to justice.
He is the founding president of the Fourah Bay College Human Rights Clinic and founding Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Court Monitoring Programme. He has also worked with the UN, Human Rights Watch, and the International Center for Transitional Justice. In 2018, Mr Sesay was a Visiting Fellow at Harvard Law School’s Human Rights Program.
He holds an LL.M. in International Human Rights from the University of Notre Dame Law School and was called to the Sierra Leone Bar two decades ago. Mr Sesay has taught and lectured extensively at universities worldwide and served as an expert commentator on human rights and international justice in prominent media.
