Biography
The Honourable Andries Nel, MP, serves as South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development.
Born in New Orleans while his father was South Africa’s consul, he grew up across continents and developed a lifelong commitment to justice and human rights. A law graduate of the University of Pretoria, he was active in the anti-apartheid movement and began his career with Lawyers for Human Rights before being elected to Parliament in 1994.
Over three decades, he has contributed to the drafting of South Africa’s Constitution and has served in various parliamentary and executive roles. In 2024, he was reappointed Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development. He is also a research fellow at the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study and a director of the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA).
