Implementing open science, including open access to scientific publications, research data, and software, as well as effective engagement of civil society, demands significant changes in scientific practices and appropriate incentives. Transparent and responsible scientific cooperation and exchange is essential for the global science ecosystem to function optimally in an increasingly polarised world. Involving civil society in co-designing and co-producing scientific research is vital for devising effective solutions to complex issues. Building trust in scientific evidence and technologies and tailoring these to the needs of different communities means embracing science communication, trans-disciplinary research and citizen science as integral components of open science.
