OECD Science and Technology Policy Ministerial

Message from the Minister of Higher Education and Research from France

Dear fellow Ministers of Science and Technology,

In light of the ever-evolving global challenges, such as climate change, the significance of biodiversity, and the pursuit of sustainable resource management, there is a collective desire to bolster our commitment to science, technology, and innovation.

The lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, paired with shifting global landscapes, underscore the pressing need for enhanced collaboration. Governments, businesses, and civil society increasingly recognize the imperative to refine and strengthen their research and innovation strategies, all in pursuit of a more sustainable and harmonious future, grounded in shared values and robust governance.

As the French Minister of Higher Education and Research, I am honored to chair the OECD's Science and Technology Policy Ministerial Meeting on 23-24 April 2024. This convening aims to foster a coordinated and action-driven agenda in the realms of science, technology, and innovation. Building on the preparatory work undertaken by the OECD, our discussions will delve into pivotal issues to hone our policies and direct our collective efforts where they are most required.

During this Ministerial Meeting, our focus will be on crafting an action-oriented Declaration, urging key stakeholders to embrace an ambitious research and innovation policy to address the climate challenge. We also aim to elevate the role of science, technology, and innovation in other policy areas and to lay down a roadmap for future endeavors and priorities of the OECD's Committee for Scientific and Technological Policy (CSTP).

I would like to extend my gratitude to the OECD for its unwavering professionalism and consistent support to our nations. I eagerly anticipate our forthcoming gathering at the Science and Technology Policy Ministerial on 23 April 2024, followed by the Multistakeholder High-Level Dialogue.

Fueled by a desire to collaborate and seek solutions, I remain at your disposal for any constructive discourse.

Kind regards,
Sylvie Retailleau,
Chair of the OECD's 2024 Science and Technology Policy Ministerial Meeting.
