International migration in all its dimensions is a policy priority for many countries. While progress has been made in collecting, analysing and disseminating data on migrants and migration in recent years, the supply of statistics has not kept pace with the demand. Indeed, basic data on migrant stocks and flows, on the social and economic characteristics of international migrants, and on the drivers and impacts of international migration remain scarce in many countries. Moreover, country level data are often collected on the basis of different methodologies, significantly hindering international comparability and generation of regional and global insights.
To address the need for accurate, up-to-date and disaggregated statistics on international migration and migrants, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN/DESA), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have jointly organised three earlier editions of the International Forum on Migration Statistics (IFMS) in 2018, 2020 and 2023.
