OECD Forum on Due Diligence in the Garment and Footwear Sector

Post-COVID union-led approaches to due diligence in garment supply chains

Feb 20, 2024 | 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM

Description

Organised by: Global Labor Justice - International Labor Rights Forum (GLJ-ILRF) and Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFWA) In 2023, twenty garment sector unions, Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFWA) and Global Labor Justice - International Labor Rights Forum (GLJ-ILRF) made a Specific Instance submission to the US National Contact Point (US NCP) for the OECD Guidelines regarding Nike’s conduct during COVID, including Nike’s failure to consult trade unions representing its supply chain workers when changing orders in response to the pandemic. This Specific Instance raises an issue that is critical for all lead firms in garment and footwear — how should trade unions play a role in human rights due diligence? This panel will feature workers and unions to discuss union-led approaches to due diligence under the OECD Guidelines, drawing from missed opportunities during COVID to consider best practices for how companies can address future human rights impacts to which they contribute — including during crises — through consultations with unions.
