Biography

Elisabeth Baume-Schneider has been a Federal Councillor since 2023. Since 2024, she has been at the head of the Federal Department of Home Affairs, which encompasses various areas ranging from health and social insurance to statistics and gender equality, culture and meteorology. Previously, she headed the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP). Previously, after a term as minister in the Jura government, she headed the Haute École de travail social et de la santé in Lausanne, from 2016 to 2020. She also chaired the Federal Film Commission from 2012 to 2016. Committed to public service, she is involved in various associations and foundations active in the cultural, social, educational, soft mobility and environmental fields, from which she resigns upon her accession to the Federal Council. A member of the Socialist Party, Elisabeth Baume-Schneider has held various political positions. She was a member of the Jura cantonal parliament from 1995 to 2002, chairing it in 2000. Elected to the Jura Government in 2003, she headed the Department of Education, Culture and Sport for thirteen years. She was President of the Jura Government in 2006, 2008 and 2012. After her term as cantonal minister, she headed the Haute École de travail social et de la santé in Lausanne, from 2016 to 2020. From 2019 to 2022, she will represent Jura in the Council of States, the cantonal chamber of the federal parliament. She studied economics and social sciences at the University of Neuchâtel, graduating with a degree in social sciences.
