DEPUTY PRESIDENT OF THE SPANISH SENATE
Javier Maroto Aranzábal (Vitoria, January 6, 1972) has been the
Deputy Speaker of the Senate of Spain since August 17, 2023.
He holds a degree in Economic and Business Sciences from the Commercial University
of Deusto.After winning the elections, he became the mayor of the capital of the Basque
Country until 2015. Additionally, in 2012, he was elected as a member of the Basque
Parliament for Álava.
In June 2015, he ceased to be the mayor of Vitoria, despite winning the elections and
increasing the number of votes. He was appointed Deputy Secretary General for Social
and Sectoral Policy of the Popular Party. Subsequently, he was elected as a deputy for
Álava in the Congress of Deputies. After the last congress of the Popular Party, held in
2018, he took on the role of Deputy Secretary for Organization of the PP, a position he
held until 2019, when he was appointed spokesperson for the Popular Parliamentary
Group in the Senate of Spain. After the general elections in July 2023, he was designated
as the Deputy Speaker of the Senate. Furthermore, in November 2024, he was elected
president of the Democracy and Security area of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly
