Description

Stefano Scarpetta is the Chief Economist and Director of the Economics Department of the OECD from April 2026. He provides intellectual leadership and strategic direction to the work of the Economics Department and ensures the high relevance and impact of the Department’s work and alignment with the priorities of Member countries and the Secretary-General. As a key member of the Senior Management team of the Organisation, he contributes to positioning the OECD at the forefront of global economic policy thinking. He acts as the Secretary-General’s spokesperson on economic issues and participates with the Secretary-General in the International Monetary and Financial Committee and in the G7 and G20 meetings dealing with the subject under his responsibility. Under his leadership, the Economics Department provides continuous assistance and support to countries in the design, implementation, and evaluation of polices drawing from evidence-based analyses of how policy affects different economic and social outcomes. Previously, he was for 13 years the Director for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs (ELS) at the OECD and before that he held several positions in the Economics Department and ELS. From 2002-2006 he worked at the World Bank, where he took over the responsibility of labour market advisor/lead economist. He has published extensively in academic journals and edited several books. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Science Sociales (EHESS), Département et Laboratoire d’Economie Théorique Appliquée (DELTA) in Paris and a Master of Science in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
