Description

José Luis Romero Valderrama is Agricultural Engineering from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and a Master’s in Strategic Communication from Universidad Mayor. With over 15 years of experience, he has led public policies, high-impact projects, and strategic alliances connecting the public and private sectors with local communities to foster sustainable rural development. He spearheaded Chile’s first National Rural Development Policy, establishing the country’s system of indicators and quality-of-life standards for rural municipalities, as well as the first presidential advisory council on rural matters. Among other responsibilities, he directed the Network of Important Agricultural Heritage Sites in Cordillera Alto Andina and Cordillera Pehuenche ranges—recently recognized (November 13, 2025) by FAO as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS)—promoting conservation, dynamism, and resilience in indigenous territories. Currently, as Assitant Professor at the Institute of Urban and Territorial Studies at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, he leads initiatives aimed at making rurality visible and influencing public and private agendas, fostering collaboration across productive sectors and civil society through evidence-based action.
