Description

Ambassador Giancarlo Kessler, took up his duties as Permanent representative of Switzerland to the OECD in Paris in February 2019. Born in 1959 in Sorengo/Ticino (Switzerland), Mr. Kessler is holder of a Licentiate (Master’s Degree) in Economics from the University of Zurich. He worked in the private economic sector for seven years before entering into the service of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) in 1991. He spent his traineeship in Bern and Madrid. Beginning in 1993, he worked as diplomatic staff at the Finance and Economic Service in Bern. In 1997, he was assigned to Paris as First Secretary of the Delegation of Switzerland to the OECD. Beginning in 2000, he worked as Economic Counsellor at the Swiss Embassy in Rome. In 2004, Mr. Kessler was appointed Deputy Head of the International Division of the Federal Office of Public Health in Bern. From August 2007 until August 2010, he served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations and International Organizations in Vienna. As of September 2010, he was Ambassador and Head of the Sectoral Foreign Policies Division at the FDFA’s Directorate of Political Affairs in Bern. In August 2014 he took office as Head of Mission in Rome. Ambassador Kessler’s mother tongue is Italian, in addition to which he speaks French, German, English, and Spanish.
