Description
François Rebsamen is a local councillor who has held a number of national positions of responsibility, including Chairman of the Socialist Group in the Senate and Minister for Labour, Employment, Vocational Training and Social Dialogue. Formerly number two in the Socialist Party (2004-2008), François Rebsamen was also campaign manager to Ségolène Royal for the 2007 presidential election. He founded the Fédération Progressiste, a social democratic party, in 2022, the year in which he supported Emmanuel Macron’s presidential candidacy.
Having grown up in his home town of Dijon, François Rebsamen studied economics and political science at the Université de Bourgogne. He began his career as a local administrator and sub-prefect before joining Pierre Joxe, then Minister for the Interior and Decentralisation, and becoming his chief of staff.
François Rebsamen was elected mayor of Dijon in March 2001 and re-elected three times, in 2008, 2014 and 2020. Under his leadership, Dijon was granted metropolitan status in 2017, strengthening its strategic position. In November 2024, François Rebsamen announced his resignation as mayor of Dijon to be replaced by his first deputy Nathalie Koenders. He remains President of Dijon Métropole.
On 23 December 2024, he was appointed Minister for Regional Planning and Decentralisation on the nomination of Prime Minister François Bayrou.
