Alex leads Wellcome’s Strategic Program on Infectious Disease, that supports research into ways to reduce the risks and impacts of infectious disease globally. Alex joined Wellcome from Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson where he led the research and development of new drugs for tuberculosis (TB) and related diseases. He has over thirty years of experience in clinical medicine, molecular microbiology, clinical trials, and product development. Alex spent his early career working as a doctor in rural Africa, responsible for the district TB control program. After working on the pivotal trials for HAART in London he went on to spend over a decade in South Africa working initially on clinical drug development in HIV and TB, before leading a translational research group at AHRI, Durban. Alex trained in Medicine at Cambridge University and University College London, is a Member of Royal College of Physicians and completed PhD studies at Insitut Pasteur, Paris. Wellcome is a global charitable foundation which supports science to solve urgent health challenges.
