Description
Michael Kaufman is a writer, advisor and speaker focused on engaging men to support gender equality, ending men’s violence against women, transforming fatherhood and promoting positive ideals of manhood. In 1991, he co-founded the White Ribbon Campaign, the first international effort of men working to end violence against women. He is a senior fellow at Equimundo (formerly Promundo) based in Washington DC.
His work over the past four decades with governments, educators, researchers, corporations, NGOs, women’s groups, and the United Nations has taken him to fifty countries. He served the prime minister of Canada and the president of France as a member of Canada’s and France’s respective G7 Gender Equality Advisory Councils in 2018 and 2019.
He is the author or editor of nine books on gender issues, on democracy and development studies, and works of fiction. His articles have appeared in newspapers and journals around the world and have been translated into sixteen languages. His most recent non-fiction book is The Time Has Come. Why Men Must Join the Gender Equality Revolution.
He is the author of an award-winning novel, The Possibility of Dreaming on a Night Without Stars. His most recent novel is a mystery, The Last Resort.
He has consulted extensively and spoken to many audiences within the UN system, including UN Women, UNFPA, the World Bank, UNICEF, UNESCO, UNDP, WFP, IFAD, and ITC in New York, Rome, Paris, Beijing, Kathmandu, Ankara, Geneva, Nairobi, Washington, Santiago, Jakarta, and Delhi.
He has worked with diverse corporations and professional firms including: Rio Tinto, JP Morgan Chase, Ernst and Young, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, CITI, Microsoft, PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble, Accenture, HP, Deloitte, Royal Bank of Canada, PECO, Baltimore Power, Philips Electronics, Unilever, and Triumph International.
He delivered the keynote addresses UN Women’s 2016 and 2017 conferences on gender equality and corporate social responsibility. He was a featured speaker at “Business Partners for Gender Equality,” the Women's Empowerment event at the United Nations.
In 2017 he was awarded Canada’s Meritorious Service Cross and he’s a UN Women Canada laureate. The international organization of civil servants, Apolitical, named him to its Gender Equality Top 100—The Most Influential People in Global Policy 2019.
Dr. Kaufman previously taught at York University in Toronto. He lives in Toronto, Canada, is married, and has a grown daughter and son.
