Economic resilience, green and just transition

5 October 2023
San José, Costa Rica

About the Ministerial Summit

The COVID-19 pandemic had a disproportionate impact in Latin America and the Caribbean; the region’s economy faced the largest recession in 100 years, and many of the structural challenges, such as informality and inequality, were exacerbated. Russia’s aggression in Ukraine introduced uncertainty and inflationary pressures to an already weak recovery. The recovery appears as an opportunity to push for a needed green transition in LAC in a timely and just manner. If the right policies are put in place, a green recovery could create new quality net green jobs in LAC by 2030. Although the cost of the transition is high, inaction has deeper consequences.

The First Ministerial on Environmental Sustainability will gather government officials from OECD and LAC countries, the EU and International and Regional Organisations to discuss the interaction between environmental sustainability objectives with the productivity, social inclusion and governance agendas. It will address the different angles of the green transition in Latin America, best practices, lessons learned and provide guidance to the Regional Programme on how to support the region advance on the green and just transition.

The Ministerial will also aim at supporting implementation of the Commitments adopted in the IX Summit of the Americas: Our Sustainable Green Future and Accelerating the Clean, Sustainable, Renewable, and Just Energy Transition. It will serve as a stepping-stone towards the 2025 UN Ocean Conference which will be co-chaired by Costa Rica and France.
