Description

Dr Hiroyuki Umeki is an Executive Director of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan (NUMO) which is the implementer of Japan's geological disposal programme. NUMO is responsible for overview of all technical activities on geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) and long-lived intermediate level waste (termed TRU waste in Japan). He has particular roles in supporting repository design and safety assessment, in addition to guiding a project covering evolution of knowledge management for the geological disposal programme. During his over 35 years work in radioactive waste management, he was strongly involved in post-closure performance/safety assessment and generic safety case projects at Japan Atomic Energy Agency for the feasibility studies of geological disposal of HLW in Japan. After joining NUMO, he took the lead to develop the first safety case of NUMO (NUMO Safety Case) published in 2021. Dr Umeki has been intensively involved in international groups, associated with the International Atomic Energy Agency and the OECD/Nuclear Energy Agency.
