Description

Sungyeol Choi is an associate professor of nuclear engineering and the founding head of the Integrated Major in Sustainable High-level Radioactive Waste Management, pursuing a convergence of engineering and social science education, at Seoul National University (SNU). His research interests lie at the intersection of used nuclear fuel management, materials for advanced nuclear reactors, and nuclear nonproliferation with a particular focus on molten salt chemistry and technologies, as well as radioactive waste disposal. Before joining SNU, he was an associate professor of nuclear and quantum engineering and a deputy director at the Nuclear Nonproliferation Education & Research Center at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and an assistant professor of nuclear engineering at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST). Additionally, he was a senior researcher at the Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle Technology Development, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). He also served as a research fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He earned a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering in 2012 and a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering (summa cum laude) in 2008 from Seoul National University.
