Description

Dr. Byung-Gon Chae is currently a principal researcher at the Deep Subsurface Storage and Disposal Research Center at KIGAM. He received his B.Sc. degree in Geology in 1991 and his M.S. degree in Structural Geology in 1994 from Kyungpook National University, and his Ph.D. degree in Engineering Geology from Nagoya University, Japan, in 2003. He has conducted several research projects on the analysis of the geological environment in Korea for siting a HLW disposal repository and the development of site characterization methods in the deep subsurface. He contributed to the development of the Korean national technology roadmap for HLW disposal by 2060 as the leader of the site selection group. Currently, he serves as the principal investigator for an R&D project aimed at developing safety verification methods for deep disposal systems for spent nuclear fuel, supported by the Korea Nuclear Safety and Security Commission from 2021 to 2028. Also, he is a specialist for the IAEA Siting Criteria Documentation Consultancy Group. He has published over 90 scientific papers in the field of geological disposal of radioactive waste and engineering geology.
