Description

Dr. Jens Birkholzer is a Senior Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in Berkeley, California. He currently serves as the Director of LBNL’s Energy Geosciences Division (EGD), a research unit of ~250 staff and affiliates. Jens’ science portfolio centers on evaluating the feasibility and environmental sustainability of a broad portfolio of geo-energy applications, with particular focus on the role of subsurface resources for radioactive waste disposal and geologic carbon storage. He coordinates the international collaboration activities of the U.S. Department of Energy's disposal program and leads the international DECOVALEX Initiative as its Chair. Jens is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, and a Senior Fellow of the California Council on Science and Technology.
