Description
Dr Liisa Heikinheimo’s current position is Head of Nuclear Section, and she focuses on nuclear energy and waste management at the energy department of Ministry of Economic Affairs. Her main tasks are directing the Finnish nuclear energy programme, licensing activities and the nuclear waste management programme in Finland.
Before her present post, until 2016, she worked for TVO, nuclear power Company in Finland, as the Head of R&D and Waste management administration for 8 years. Dr Heikinheimo started to work at VTT (technical research centre of Finland) as a research scientist in 1985 and continued in various positions until resigned from the position of Research Manager of Materials for Power Engineering in 2008. In her current position, Dr Heikinheimo has chaired several national working groups since 2017 in the field of nuclear energy and she has actively participated and managed international co-operation, especially linked to Euratom programmes and bilateral European joint programmes in the field of nuclear energy, for over 20 years.
The IAEA Light Water Reactor Working Group has been a long term activity. In OECD NEA the special attention is now the in the Steering Committee. In the European Council Dr Heikinheimo was the Chairman of the Atomic Questions Working Party during the autumn 2019 (during the FI EU presidency).
She has studied at Helsinki University of Technology (present Aalto University), where she obtained her MSc in 1980. She did her doctoral thesis in Technical University of Eindhoven, NL, DSc in 1995. Furthermore, she has made two scientific long term visits abroad; 1990-91 to The Netherlands (TNO centre for technical ceramics in Eindhoven) and in 2000-2001 to Germany (FZK materials institute in Karlsruhe).
