Description

Dr Emily Stein works as a Technical Manager at Sandia National Laboratories and as a member of the technical leadership team for the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Spent Fuel and Waste Science and Technology Campaign. Dr Stein is responsible for development of the DOE’s next-generation software toolkit for quantitative post-closure safety assessment and supports the program’s underground research in bedded salt. Previously, she implemented a range of generic performance assessment calculations for mined disposal concepts in argillite, crystalline, and salt host rocks and for deep borehole disposal. Additionally, Dr Stein is involved in performance assessment for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant and now provides leadership for the development of a high-performance computing simulator to enhance performance assessment calculations for the WIPP. Dr Stein holds a BA in Geology from Amherst College and an MS and PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of California, Santa Cruz
