Alain Pellet is a leading figure in Public International Law. He taught at the University Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense, specialising in International Economic Law, and directed the university’s Centre de Droit International (CEDIN) from 1991 to 2001. He co-directed the Master 2 program on International and European Union Law and authored numerous influential works. From 1990 to 2011, Pellet served as a Member of the UN International Law Commission, chairing it in 1997. He has acted as counsel for many governments and international organisations and participated in around fifty cases before the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and various investment arbitration cases. He presided over the Institute of International Law between 2021 and 2023. He has been nominated to the UNCLOS Annex VII list of arbitrators and the ICSID Panel, serving as arbitrator or president in several cases. He also contributed to expert bodies on former Yugoslavia (“Badinter Arbitration Committee”), advises the World Tourism Organisation, and served as Independent Objector for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.
