Mr. Zakaria Laghzaoui has spent several years within the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Kingdom of Morocco, where he held several positions of responsibility. In particular, he managed commercial litigation matters before subsequently heading the Division of Commercial Affairs and Arbitration Litigation within the Judicial Agency of the Kingdom, where he oversaw cases involving commercial disputes and international arbitration.
In this capacity, he represented the Kingdom of Morocco in several international arbitration proceedings before the ICSID and was involved in the management of complex investment and commercial disputes.
Alongside his institutional responsibilities, Mr. Laghzaoui served as a member of several governmental committees and working groups dealing with trade and investment issues. In this role, he actively contributed to improving the business environment in Morocco and strengthening the country’s legal and regulatory framework for investment and commercial activities.
Mr. Laghzaoui holds a National Doctorate in International Business Law, specialising in international arbitration, obtained with distinction in 2018. He is a seasoned legal expert with extensive experience in commercial law, investment law, international arbitration, and dispute settlement.
He is also the author of several books and scholarly articles published in internationally recognised academic journals addressing issues related to international economic law, arbitration, and investment governance.
Drawing on his diverse professional and academic background, Mr. Laghzaoui has developed a strong commitment to advancing economic integration and development across Africa. He currently serves as Senior Advisor to the Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), where he contributes to initiatives aimed at strengthening the continent’s trade, investment, and dispute settlement frameworks
