Biography
Alina-Ștefania Gorghiu (born 1978) is a Romanian lawyer and politician affiliated with the National Liberal Party (PNL). A Member of the Chamber of Deputies representing Argeș County since 2024, she is a prominent figure in Romanian politics with more than 17 years of legislative experience and a consistent focus on women’s rights and the protection of vulnerable groups. Gorghiu’s political journey began in local government, where she served as a councillor on the Sector 5 council in Bucharest from 2004 to 2008, before being elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 2008. In 2014 she became the first woman to lead a major Romanian political party as President of the PNL, and from 2016 to 2024 she served as a Senator, including as Vice-President of the Senate and, from 2022 to 2023, as Acting President of the Senate. As Minister of Justice from 2023 to 2024, she advanced reforms strengthening the rule of law and victim protection. Gorghiu has spearheaded landmark gender-equality initiatives, including the adoption of Romania’s femicide law, the introduction of electronic monitoring for aggressors, the extension of protection orders, and a proposed 30% gender quota on electoral lists. She currently chairs the Special Parliamentary Committee “Romania without Domestic Violence,” serves as Vice-Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and is a member of the Romanian Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Before entering politics, she practised as a lawyer specialising in commercial, civil and criminal law and worked as an insolvency practitioner and mediator.
