Biography

Katharina Jestaedt was born in Lisbon/Portugal in 1969. She studied law at the University of Bonn and at the University of Freiburg and completed her professional education with the second state examination in law in 1997. During her professional career, she held positions at the Federal Chancellery, the Press and Information Office of the Federal Government, and in the administrative courts of the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia, where she worked as a judge. She went on to work at the State Chancellery of the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Ministry of Justice, before joining the Liaison Office of the German Bishop’s Conference as deputy head for a few years, a role in which she represented the interests of the Bishop's Conference to the German Government. Afterwards, she returned to North Rhine-Westphalia for 5 years, where she established a new department for digitalisation at the local Ministry of the Interior. Since June 2025, Ms Jestaedt has headed the Directorate-General for Women and Gender Equality at the Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMBFSFJ).
