Vice Minister for International Affairs

Presentation

Mr. Hirai Hirohide has been serving as Vice Minister for International Affairs at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) since July 2022. He leads all of METI’s international policy operations and represents the ministry in cross-border economic dialogues and negotiations, and travels alongside the Prime Minister on overseas missions to advise on economic, trade, industrial and energy policy. Since joining METI, Mr. Hirai has served in a wide range of senior posts. Prior to his current position, Mr. Hirai was appointed Director-General of the Economic and Industrial Policy Bureau in July 2021. From 2020, as Director-General of the Commerce and Information Policy Bureau, Mr. Hirai oversaw METI policy related to the IT industry, including cyber security and the online creative content industry. Mr. Hirai received his BA in law from the University of Tokyo in 1987 and his MSc degree in international relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1993.
