Description
Rick Barichello is a Professor of Food and Resource Economics at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on economic analysis of public policy, particularly trade, agricultural policies and their institutions, Canadian dairy quota markets, and agricultural development issues, mostly in Southeast Asia. This latter work focuses on trade policy, rural labour markets, domestic farm policies, exports and agricultural productivity, evaluation of investment projects, and food security. He has published over 100 papers and was on the Editorial Board for the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Economics, and the Journal of Southeast Asia Economics.
His previous positions include Head of the UBC Department of Agricultural Economics (1988-1994), Director of the UBC Center for Southeast Asia Research (2007-13, 2016-18), and Director of UBC’s Food and Resource Economics group (2023-2025). He was Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the National University of Singapore, and Visiting Professor at Yale, Stanford, Harvard, University of California-Davis, KU-Leuven (Belgium), ISEAS in Singapore, Director of the Indonesian Customs and Economic Management project for the Harvard Institute for International Development (’86-’88), and an Advisor to the Prime Minister’s Consultative Group and the Minister of Agriculture for the Government of Vietnam (1995-97). He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago.
