Description

Ambassador Stephen Jones took up his duties as Permanent Representative of Australia to the OECD on 11 September 2025. Ambassador Jones is a former Federal Parliamentarian (Member for Whitlam), serving 5 terms between 2010 and 2025. Between 2022–2025, he was the Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services and a member of the Expenditure Review Committee of Cabinet. Key ministerial achievements included delivering a major economic reform agenda across superannuation, financial crime, banking services, financial advice, credit law, consumer protection, insurance and digital policy. He also held a range of Shadow Ministerial positions between 2014–2022 in the areas of health, communications, infrastructure, regional development, financial services and Shadow Assistant Treasurer. Before entering Parliament in 2010 he was the National Secretary of the Community and Public Sector Union (2005-2010) and spent many years working as a community worker and lawyer. Ambassador Jones graduated from the University of Wollongong with a Bachelor of Arts (1988) and from Macquarie University with a Bachelor of Law (2003).
