Peter Wooders

International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)

Senior Director, Energy Programme Leader

Presentation

Peter Wooders leads the International Institute for Sustainable Development’s Energy programme, which helps countries transition to sustainable energy systems. Major focus areas include: the Global Subsidies Initiative, which has been identifying subsidies which act against sustainable development and helping governments reform them since 2005; new work making the case for increased energy taxation; demonstrating the full costs and risks of fossil fuels compared to clean alternatives; and promoting both increased private sector investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency while developing the circular economy to reduce unsustainable primary resource inputs and waste. Trained as an engineer and economist, Peter has worked in the energy economy since 1991, in a wide range of countries and across almost every area of energy supply and demand, from oil and gas production to climate change mitigation and from nuclear waste disposal to clean energy subsidy swaps. His work has evolved from modelling and techno-economic studies to a strong focus on the climate crisis and how energy systems and the political economy need to adapt to it. Just transition and a trade system which supports climate action and sustainable development are central. Peter has been fortunate to work in dozens of countries around the world, particularly Egypt; India; Indonesia; Nigeria; Viet Nam; South-East Asian countries; and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The challenge they all face – providing reliable and affordable energy while keeping the air clean, providing good jobs and contributing to stable public finances – drives the work of IISD’s Energy Programme.
