Description
For 25+ years, Sara Napier has been an active member of the Nova Scotia professional community with a focus on strategic leadership, partnership building, and community development.
At present, Sara is the CEO of United Way Maritimes - serving Central and Southwestern NB, PEI and Mainland NS. Sara and her colleagues have been recognized by several regional and national organizations for leadership, impact, and corporate culture excellence.
Previous roles include vice-president of strategy and marketing for the IWK Health Centre Foundation, manager of media and external relations for Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), and director of community economic development for municipal government in rural Nova Scotia.
Current volunteer Board roles are with the International Women’s Forum Canada (Atlantic Chapter Board and Executive) and Nova Scotia Community College (Chair, Programs Committee and member, Executive Committee). Sara is also actively involved with several national United Way Centraide committees focused on collaboration and network modernization including the Major Market CEO Table. Past Board roles include 211 Nova Scotia, Engage Nova Scotia, and HomeBridge Youth Society.
Sara has received a Halifax Progress Women of Excellence Award, an Innovation of the Year Award from the International Community College Network, an Alumni Excellence Award from Saint Mary’s University (SMU) Sobey School of Business, and a Community Leader of the Year Award from the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission. In March 2021, under her leadership, United Way Halifax was awarded Not-for-Profit of the Year from the Halifax Business Awards, and in 2022, a Canadian Nonprofit Employer of Choice Award. Most recently, Sara received the President's Award for Innovation from United Way Centraide Canada in recognition of her leadership and commitment to organizational transformation across the country.
She holds an ICD.D from the Institute of Corporate Directors-Rotman, University of Toronto (2021); an MBA from Saint Mary’s University (2011); a Bachelor of Public Relations from Mount Saint Vincent University (1995), and a Community Economic Development Certificate from NSCC (1997).
Sara passionately supports younger professionals develop their careers and community leadership. To this end, she is actively involved in community volunteering including several mentorship programs, and she has served as a part-time professor in the Masters of Public Relations program and Bachelor of at Mount Saint Vincent University.
