Biography
Mr Wong Kok Weng is Singapore’s Chief Public Defender, leading the Public Defender’s Office (PDO) since its establishment in December 2022. He oversees the provision of criminal defence aid to individuals of limited means facing non-capital charges and serves on the Sentencing Advisory Panel, which promotes consistency and transparency in sentencing.
A National University of Singapore graduate, Mr Wong has served in the Legal Service since 1988, holding roles as Magistrate, legal counsel in the Ministry of Defence, and Deputy Public Prosecutor at the Attorney-General’s Chambers. He chaired the inter-agency committee that created the Appropriate Adult Scheme to support vulnerable suspects during police interviews, and continues to oversee it today. His distinguished service has been recognised with the Public Administration Medals (Bronze, 1999; Silver, 2024) and the Long Service Award (2021).
