Biography
Dr Alejandro Ponce is the Executive Director of the World Justice Project (WJP), leading global efforts to promote the rule of law through research, data analysis, and strategic initiatives.
A trained economist, Dr Ponce has significantly shaped WJP’s research since its inception. Serving as Chief Research Officer from 2012 to 2025, he was pivotal in developing the WJP Rule of Law Index and spearheaded the creation of key data products, including country and thematic diagnostics, environmental rule of law indicators, and legal needs surveys conducted in over 100 countries. He also led the first study quantifying the global justice gap and expanded WJP’s presence in Mexico and the European Union by launching subnational justice indicators, advancing criminal justice research, and overseeing documentary film projects.
Before joining WJP, Dr Ponce was a researcher at Yale University and worked as an economist at the World Bank and the Mexican Banking and Securities Commission. His research covers behavioural economics, financial inclusion, justice indicators, and the rule of law. His work has been published in leading academic journals such as the American Economic Review and the Journal of Law and Economics.
Dr Ponce holds a B.A. in Economics from ITAM, Mexico, and both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University. A frequent speaker at international conferences and policy forums, he is dedicated to translating rule of law data into practical solutions worldwide.
