Director, Strategic Criminal Investigations

Description

Darren Latimore spent 34 years as a sworn police officer in the Australian Federal Police, with a particular interest in financial crime investigations. Darren was the team leader of a financial investigation team that investigated serious tax frauds such as Operation Beaufighter, then the largest tax fraud in Australian history with a tax loss of over $300million. The two main offenders were both convicted, with the primary offender receiving 14 years in prison, which was at the time also the largest penalty handed down for a fraud offence. In 2017 he was instrumental in establishing joint AFP/ATO investigation teams aimed at tackling complex tax fraud offences. In 2018 Darren took on the role of Inspector as the Operational lead for the AFP in a Commonwealth joint taskforce known as the Serious Financial Crime Taskforce. Darren had a part time role in the AFP delivering financial crime investigation and money laundering courses domestically and internationally, and previously undertook work for Charles Sturt University in Australia, delivering an online post graduate subject in the School of Security and Policing. In 2023 Darren moved from the AFP to the Australian Taxation Office as the Director of Strategic Criminal Investigations. In his current role, he is building capability across ATO investigators, and evolving the approach to criminal investigations to be more strategic, to attempt to bring consequence to criminals in more real time, and to attempt different ways of undertaking investigations to have greater effect.
